Scoliosis treatment to correct deviations of the spine

Scoliosis is a sideways deviation of the spine greater than 10 degrees. Scoliosis treatment will vary depending on age, degree of deviation, location and potential for progression. The objective is to stop the evolution of the curvature, improve aesthetic aspects related to the deviation and correct postural abnormalities by increasing the musculature of the trunk and facilitating pulmonary ventilation.

Before finding out about scoliosis treatment though, we will learn a little more about the condition. What is scoliosis? How can we detect it?

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine involving lateral displacement, accompanied by rotation of the vertebrae and displacement on the anterior-posterior plane of the spine. There are several types of scoliosis:

  • Of unknown cause. This is the most common and affects children and young people.
  • This occurs due to malformations caused by inadequate development of the vertebrae before birth.
  • Associated with neurological or muscle diseases.
  • Scoliosis due to other causes. Injuries, tumours, infections, etc.

As it does not cause pain, scoliosis in children can only be detected by asymmetry of the shoulders or the presence of a hump. In adults, it can lead to some degree of pain because the deformity can cause contractures and pain in other joints.

Treatment of scoliosis: how to correct scoliosis

Scoliosis treatment will depend on the degree of the condition and the age of the patient. If the scoliosis is in an initial phase and the deviation is slight, scoliosis treatment will consist of physiotherapy exercises to strengthen the musculature and correct the posture of the body and spine.

If the curvature is between 20 and 40 degrees, treatment will consist of the use of an orthopaedic brace and physiotherapy.  In the case of scoliosis in children, it may be advisable to use a Kallabis harness, such as the one offered by Orliman. The purpose of the Kallabis harness is to maintain the curvature so that it does not worsen as the child grows. The advantages of this harness are that it is made from soft material, it is easy to fit and it enables the patient to walk and stand. The child does not then feel any discomfort while wearing the brace. It is especially recommended for scoliosis in infants.

In this case, physiotherapeutic exercises should also be performed with the baby to remedy the incorrect posture. If scoliosis in children appears at an early age, the prognosis can worsen because growth tends to increase the inclination of the spine. This is why it is important to begin scoliosis treatment as soon as possible.

In the case of a highly pronounced deviation, the solution is surgery. This corrects the deviation and the spine stabilises in the correct anatomical position. After surgery, physiotherapy exercises must be performed to recover mobility and improve muscle tone.

Correcting the deviation of the spine and trying to stop it from worsening is essential to preventing other physical and psychological problems. Scoliosis can cause pain in other joints such as the hips and legs, as well as decreased lung capacity and chronic fatigue. The back deformity and appearance of a hump can also cause psychological problems in children.  Treating it in time is essential to preventing them.
